In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, technology is shaping the way we learn, connect and create. At Portside Christian College, we see digital technology not simply as a tool, but as an opportunity to enrich learning, spark curiosity and prepare our students for the future.

From collaborative platforms to emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), students are increasingly engaging with tools that support exploration, communication and deeper thinking. As AI becomes more present in everyday life, including education, it is important that students learn how to use it wisely and responsibly.

Teaching Digital Ethics and Responsibility

A key focus at Portside is helping students understand what it means to use technology with integrity. In an AI-enabled world, we explicitly teach academic honesty and guide students in making appropriate decisions about when and how AI can be used.

Depending on their year level, students may use AI to:

  • Generate ideas and support brainstorming

  • Explore different perspectives on a topic

  • Develop an understanding of how AI works, including its strengths and limitations

Importantly, students are also taught that AI is not always accurate. They are encouraged to question, verify and evaluate information alongside their teachers.

We maintain clear expectations across the College:

  • AI use is always teacher-directed and purposeful

  • Students do not submit AI-generated work as their own

  • Digital safety and privacy are prioritised

  • Age-appropriate tools are used across Upper Primary and Secondary

Supporting Thinking, Creativity and Growth

While AI can be a powerful support, it will never replace the essential work of learning, thinking and creating. At Portside, we are intentional about helping students develop strong thinking skills and self-awareness in their learning.

Students are encouraged to reflect on when AI may be helpful and when it is more valuable to rely on their own thinking. Our teachers carefully design learning experiences that support this balance—ensuring students continue to grow in creativity, problem-solving and independent thought.

Nurturing Responsible Digital Citizens

As a Christian community, we believe that technology should be used in ways that honour truth, creativity and the gifts we have been given. Alongside developing digital skills, we are committed to shaping students who use technology with integrity, wisdom and care.

We encourage families to be part of this journey—by asking questions about their child’s learning, discussing how AI is being used, and reinforcing the importance of honesty and effort.

At Portside Christian College, we are equipping our students not only to navigate a changing world, but to lead within it with confidence, discernment and integrity.
