Every Day is Reconciliation Day

At Portside Christian College, reconciliation is more than a moment in time—it is a daily posture of learning, listening, and walking together. Our knowledge and respect for Indigenous history and culture is gently growing, one step at a time. We know we still have a way to go, and we believe that the more we learn, the more we can build true understanding, empathy, and connection.

We acknowledge the plan God has for all His people and the land He created. Together, we seek to be caretakers of this land—learning from its traditional custodians and honouring their deep spiritual connection to Country.

This year, our Year 5 students have been exploring what reconciliation means. Here’s what they had to say:

God created ALL people, no matter what their colour or tradition. I also think they should have a peaceful relationship with everyone and we should all work together.”
“Reconciliation means that all Australians work together and be friends.”
“To me, reconciliation means that we recognise the history of what happened to Aboriginal people and their beautiful land. The Stolen Generation had their children taken because some people thought they knew better. Today we are trying to make things equal and mend the broken community.”
“Reconciliation is a way to recognise the whole Aboriginal community and the damage that was done when people took land from the Aboriginal people. Reconciliation is about understanding the relationship between the land and the Aboriginal people.”
“Reconciliation is learning to say sorry for taking Aboriginal land and everything that was special to them. It is also knowing that we can learn from Aboriginal people and culture.”

These reflections show that reconciliation is not just about the past—it’s about building a better future. One where truth is acknowledged, culture is celebrated, and relationships are restored.

We’re excited to welcome new neighbours across the river. The Yitpi Yartapuultiku Centre. With a beautiful new beach already creating a stunning view from our College, we look forward to meaningful engagement and partnership with Yitpi Yartapuultiku in the years to come.

Reconciliation at Portside is a journey—one we walk humbly, guided by faith, respect, and the hope of a united future.
